David Weir created the sense of community and the laid back atmosphere that turned Buckley's Tavern in Centreville, DE into the de facto "town hall" of northern Delaware. That Buckley's is dead and gone. The name lives on, but not the menu or the spirit of the place. We just had to see what his new place was like.
GOAT opened about two years ago as a neighborhood bar and restaurant in North Wilmington off Marsh Road near the intersection of Silverside. From the outside it is unassuming. On the inside it is strip mall straightforward transformed with shabby chic/salvaged wood details. It is clear that every detail was thought through by someone who knows the restaurant business. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff was welcoming and friendly. The menu offers bar snacks, shared plates, sandwiches & burgers, pizza, soups & salads, vegetarian options, and really non-vegetarian options.
We ordered a ham and cheese pizza - garlic cream, Viginia ham, poblano, red onion, 3 cheeses $14 and a Crispy Fish sandwich - IPA beer batter tilapia, smashed fries, remoulade poblano slaw $13.50. Both were really well prepared and presented. The pizza reminded us of pizza we had in Paris. The fish sandwich also tasted like it had been imported from another country. The tastes were atypical and exactly what we were hoping to find. Something different...a new presentation...an innovative menu. Pair that with great service and a bartender that went out of her way to mix us a drink we had discovered in Brooklyn and the experience was worth the drive from Chadds Ford. We will be back and we will bring our friends!
