The Water Battery
Across the bridge is the Water Battery developed by L'Enfant on which was placed 18-pound guns to fire south down the river. This battery became more developed with the addition of a shot furnace and and landing pier. In 1864, 15 inch gun emplacements were installed and by 1871 brick and sod covered magazines were added to store munitions. Today, you can picnic here.
