The Main Gate
Not part of the original fort, the main gate was more of a monumental entrance facing the river. To the left of the gate are two arched entrances to bombproof casements. The one with the iron gate was used as a prison and leads to a chamber with narrow slits in the outer wall used to house troops during re-enactments. It was lighted by lanterns and warmed by a fire in a hearth at the time this picture was taken.
